BLEAK HOUSE: A Book About a Never-Ending Court Case
In foggy London, life is hard for many. This story shows how a very long court case can ruin people’s lives—rich and poor alike.
This is Charles Dickens’s Bleak House. It is a mix of a mystery and a strong look at society.
The Main Problem: The Jarndyce Case 🏛️
The story is about a court case called Jarndyce and Jarndyce. This case is about a family’s money and land, but it has gone on for many, many years. It is in the Court of Chancery, a court that is very slow and confusing. This case is like a monster that takes all the money and hope from everyone who is involved.
The Characters and the Story
The book is told in two ways:
1. A narrator talks about the whole city, showing the dirty streets and the fancy houses of the rich.
2. Esther Summerson tells her own story. She is a kind young woman who doesn’t know who her parents are.
Esther goes to live at a house called Bleak House. There, she meets two young people, Ada and Richard, who are waiting for the case to finish so they can get their money.
But the story gets dangerous. A powerful lawyer named Mr.
Tulkinghorn finds out a big secret about a rich lady, Lady Dedlock. This secret is linked to Esther and the court case. When Mr. Tulkinghorn tries to use this secret, it causes a murder. Now, everything that seemed separate comes together.
